The Burlington Youth Council is Off to a Strong Start!

To date the Burlington Youth Council has had 3 successful meetings, including one four hour orientation. We have a total of 15 members in the new Youth Council, and we have both Marshall Simmonds Middle School as well as Burlington High School represented. This year, the Youth Council has chosen to focus on drug/alcohol abuse within Burlington. They will begin their work with a survey that they are creating, which will be administered to middle school as well as high school students. The goals of the survey are to look at the overall effectiveness of the alcohol program that is currently in place in the middle school and increasing the awareness of alcohol related issues, as well as to see if the program carries over effectively into the choices high school students make. The Youth Council also hopes to see whether a drug abuse component should be included within the alcohol program, as it currently only covers alcohol abuse.

Once the Youth Council compiles the results from the surveys, they hope to present their findings to a variety of organizations within Burlington.  These findings will likely lead them to their next exciting project.  The Burlington Youth Council is also beginning their first Mini-Grant program, which is being funded by Comcast, and has begun posting flyers around the schools for any interested clubs.
