Developing Social Capitalists; SCI's New Strategic Focus

Two months have passed since our great SCI Social Capitalist Luncheon took place, where we kicked off our campaign to develop a comprehensive "Social Capitalist" leadership curriculum in support of our new strategic focus on "Developing Social Capitalists".

We believe that the daunting challenges of the day call for a unique brand of leaders that we like to call Social Capitalists. Social Capitalists possess a unique set of skills and attitudes that enable them to collaborate effectively, make connections, reach across differences, and nurture social networks to make a difference. They are catalysts for addressing the challenges we face. The good news is that Social Capitalist skills can be taught; and SCI is uniquely positioned to help emerging leaders acquire and develop these essential qualities.

With your support, SCI is placing the development of new Social Capitalists squarely at the center of all our work. SCI aims to be the premiere organization for developing the new generation of Social Capitalists so needed in today's communities. Please click here for more background on our new strategic focus, including our goals for the next year and a downloadable summary of our plans.

Codifying our seven years of experience in a comprehensive curriculum is going to make a big difference for SCI & the communities we serve, but we can't do it without you. Please donate today, for a better tomorrow. http://www.socialcapitalinc.org/support

Expanding the SCI Network

This has been an exciting year of growth for SCI! We've added 6 new network locations replicating the SCI community web portal-Brookline, Newton, Fall River, Milford, Southbridge area Community Health Network Area (CHNA) 5, and CHNA 15 (Northwest Suburban Health Alliance). You can find links to the 6 new portals developed through this expansion at http://socialcapitalinc.org/locations. Our partners in Milford, the Juvenile Advocacy Group, have also replicated our Youth Council program there, thanks to a grant from the Comcast Foundation.

SCI is Recruiting!

AmeriCorps Logo

SCI is in the midst of recruiting for the next group of 20 full-time AmeriCorps members who will serve in our local communities. We have two primary roles: Outreach & Technology & Youth Leadership Coordinators. Positions are filling fast but we do still have a number of openings. Perhaps you know of a recent graduate who may be interested in applying to join us? It's a great way to gain experience while making a difference. For more information on position descriptions, please visit : http://socialcapitalinc.org/getinvolved/employment

Mass. AmeriCorps Funding Faces Challenges

Though we are confident that the issue will be resolved (see recruiting for AmeriCorps members above!), I wanted to let people know about the threat to AmeriCorps funding in Massachusetts and encourage you to take action if you share our belief that AmeriCorps is an incredibly valuable program.

In many ways, this is a very exciting time for AmeriCorps and other service programs. The recently passed Serve America Act calls for roughly tripling the AmeriCorps program. Yet, the fate of AmeriCorps funding in Massachusetts now rests with the budget conference committee. We are hopeful that the committee will support the $750,000 that is in the House version of the budget for the Mass. Service Alliance, as this leverages $10 million if federal funding, including our own AmeriCorps grant. For more information on the site, and for an easy way to contact your legislators on the matter, please visit this page on the Be the Change website.
